Cups of fun

Stacking plastic cups
Early years 12 months to 5 years

Who would have thought a packet of disposable plastic cups could help with early maths, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills? We show you just how much fun they can be:

What you will need:

  • A packet of plastic cups (in the picnic section at the supermarket or discount store)
  • A ping-pong ball
  • A tennis ball

Stack ’em

Ask your child to stack the cups on top of each other, and encourage them to count them out.

Toss the ping-pong

Line the cups up and ask your child to drop the ping-pong ball into one of the cups. This will help their fine motor skills. For more advanced children, you can write numbers on each of the cups and ask them to drop the ping-pong ball into the numbers you call out.

Knock ’em down

Build a tower or castle out of the cups with your child. Encourage your child to roll the tennis ball at the cups to knock them over. Together count how many cups fall down.
