The sorting game

Different coloured clothes pegs in basket
Early years 2-5 years

Sorting is part of early maths. It teaches children how to identify and classify different objects. Picking up small objects is also helpful for fine motor skills.

What you will need:

  • A cardboard box
  • Spoons
  • Pegs
  • Toy bricks
  • Crayons
  • Four plastic containers, such as ice-cream containers

Method:

  • Put four different kinds of objects into a cardboard box. They can be anything of different sizes that you’ve got around the house, for example spoons, pegs, toy blocks and crayons.
  • Give your child four plastic containers and ask them to put all the pegs in one box, and so on.
