The Australian Curriculum sets the goal for what all students should learn as they progress through their school life. Skills in the Year 1-2 curriculum include:

• recognising and using nouns
• recognising rhyming words.

It’s easy to help your child practise these skills as part of everyday life – just use these simple ideas.

List and challenge

Helping your child learn nouns can be as simple as looking around your neighbourhood together and listing the things, places and people that you can see.

Make it fun by taking turns to choose a category and challenge the other person to think of as many nouns as they can. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• places and buildings – eg school, supermarket, park, bus stop
• people – eg mother, baby, driver, doctor
• things in nature – eg trees, flowers, cockatoos, butterflies
• things we use every day – eg toothbrush, shoes, cup, soap
• proper nouns (names of people or places, usually beginning with capital letters) – eg Australia, Jessica Mauboy, George Street, Uluru.
