What is coding?

Computers are amazing, but they can’t think for themselves (yet!). They require people to give them instructions. Coding is a list of step-by-step instructions to get computers to do what you want them to do. Coding makes it possible for us to create computer software, apps and websites.

When you search for a contact in your mobile phone, a programme finds the correct number for you—based on a code. Coders, or programmers, are people who write the programmes behind everything we see and do on a computer. These instructions are given to the computer in a special programming language. There is a huge range of programming languages to choose from depending on the process or task. For example JavaScript is a language used to build interactive websites. Learning to code is bit like learning a new language.

Why should my teen learn to code?

It is often said that coding is the must-have job skill of the future. In a global, digital economy, your teen can benefit from understanding computer science and being fluent in the global language of coding.

Currently, information and communication technologies (ICT) and other industries are experiencing workforce shortages—they need people with computer literacy and programming skills. Even if your teen is not planning a career as a web developer, a basic knowledge of coding can be helpful for variety of different career paths. Computer literacy and coding are very empowering skills that are helpful for solving problems in every field and industry, from biology to economics to finance and publishing.

With technology and the global economy rapidly changing, nobody knows exactly what the careers of the future will be. But what we do know is, for the foreseeable future, coding is one of the most important and desirable skills your teen can learn.
